Due to ongoing seismic explorations by Sinopec, contracted by Petroamazonas, we regret to inform you that the Huaorani Ecolodge, located at the fringes of the Yasunà National Park, will be permanently closed. This decision is driven by the need to ensure the safety and well-being of our guests and the Huaorani community amidst environmental and social disruptions caused by oil exploration activities in their territory.
Emmy award winning media presenter David Yetman came to see what was happening with the Lodge. In this show, he transports viewers to Huaorani Ecolodge to get a glimpse of this special part of Ecuador. He also speaks with the Huaorani about the coming of the ‘oil men’ and the impact it has had on their community.
The Huaorani Ecolodge has been a model for community-based ecotourism, operated by the Huaorani people in partnership with Tropic Ecuador. This initiative has provided sustainable livelihoods that align with the preservation of the Huaorani culture and the biodiversity of one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the world.
It also represents a significant setback for sustainable tourism practices that benefit indigenous populations. The lodge has supported approximately 90 direct jobs and contributed to the welfare of an additional 250 family and community members.
Tropic Ecuador remains committed to supporting the indigenous communities and the principles of sustainable tourism. We will continue to advocate for the protection of ancestral lands against unsustainable extractive activities and believe in the power of responsible tourism to foster environmental conservation and cultural preservation.
We encourage everyone to stay informed about this issue and support initiatives that aim to protect indigenous rights and promote sustainable development in vulnerable regions.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate these challenging and very sad circumstances and strive to find a way forward that respects the rights and aspirations of the Huaorani people.
